Excitement is mounting in the north Longford parish of Granard as committee members put the finishing touches to the planned Easter Festival which takes place throughout the weekend of March 30 and 31, next.
With parades, Tug-o-Wars and fire eating - to mention but a few - it seems Granard town will definitely be the place to be this Easter time.
The event which is the first of its kind in the picturesque town comes on the back of last year’s St Patrick’s Festival, which was a resounding success.
“The festival kicks off on Saturday afternoon at 3pm with a gruelling 5K Run which will test the stamina of every particapant,” committee member Eimear O’Hara explained. “The run starts at Kiernan Milling and will finish ón Moxham Street.”
The event which is sponsored by Furilo Healthcare c/o Patrick and Oliver Durkin, Granard also boasts an array of prizes including 1st, €200; 2nd, €100 and 3rd, €50. There will be a special prize of €50 for the first U16 competitor who crosses the líne and entry to the race is €10 per adult and €5 for U16 participants.
“Later in the evening at 4:30pm, the Novelty Tug-O-War will take place on Main Street,” Ms O’Hara added.
All businesses in the area are invited to enter a team of seven people. The cost is €20 per team, and the winners will be presented with trophies proudly sponsored by Paul and Chrissie Flood.
On Sunday, from 1pm onwards, along Main Street there will be lots of fabulous entertainment for children and adults including fire eating, stilt walking and a unicyclist from Corvenieos Entertainment. The crowd are in for a very special treat with the appearance of the ‘Trialstar Team’ and Woody and Buzz Lightyear will also make an appearance for the little ones.
The parade is expected to pass through at 2pm, and the Leader has been well informed that there are a large number of floats participating.
There is still time to participate and entry is €20 per vehicle for commercial entrants and free for non commercial entrants.
