Messages of thanks have flooded in this week as the north Longford town of Granard held its hugely popular Easter Festival. “Well done to everyone who participated in the Tug-o-War,” said one of the festival’s organisers. “There was a great crowd of supporters to cheer on participants. Congratulations to Longford Lightweights who won the plaque and trophies, which were proudly sponsored by Paul and Chrissie Flood.
There was strong competition in the 5k Run. 1st prize of €200 going to James Hoare, 2nd prize €100 Eugene Feely and 3rd prize €50 Mark Tully. The winner of the U16 prize €50 was Aaron McNamee. The 5K was kindly sponsored by Furilo Healthcare c/o Patrick and Oliver Durkin.
The parade itself saw a vast array of eye catching floats with the overall award going to Granada Reunion Weekend (Granard Motte Community Enterprise Limited). Most Colourful Float design was one by Longford Macra, while Best Entertainment Float went to Abbeylara Mock Wedding. Top marks in the Best School Category was achieved by Sacred Heart NS, Granard with McBrien’s Supermarket securing the mantle of Best Dressed Window plaque which was sponsored by Lus na Gréine. Not surprisngly, entertainment wasn’t in short supply either with The Corvenieos, Trialstar Motorcycle Stunt Team, Shindig (sponsored by Macken’s Filling Station) and popular local group Paper Planes taking centre stage.
Organisers also thanked stewards, the Red Cross and local Gardaí, local businesses and people for generous sponsorship and support as well as all those who took part in the 5K, Tug-O-War, the parade and to the people who attended the food and craft fare. “Thanks to all our entertainers, to Rosemary Connolly for her beautiful Amhráin na bhFiann, to our MC David “Butch” Cassidy and to our stage manager Jonathan Owens,” said festival organisers.
“And of course a very special thank you to all the spectators and supporters who attended the events of Granard’s Easter Festival.”
