Music Appreciation course to be held at Longford Library

Longford Library will host a number of ‘Music Appreciation Evenings’ throughout February and March. For music lovers across the county, this will provide the perfect opportunity to explore and develop the musical ear, and at the very resonable cost of p30 – it might just be the perfect start to a motivating and inspiring 2013.

Longford Library will host a number of ‘Music Appreciation Evenings’ throughout February and March. For music lovers across the county, this will provide the perfect opportunity to explore and develop the musical ear, and at the very resonable cost of p30 – it might just be the perfect start to a motivating and inspiring 2013.

Local music maestro’s Luke Baxter and Fr Tom Murray will be on hand for an event that starts on Monday, February 4 and continues right through until March 11 next. Proceedings kick off at 7:30pm on each night.

Week one – Monday February 4 - will be led by Luke Baxter and includes ‘The age of Canto’.

This proves to be a recital that will feature a host of coloratura sopranos, tenors with high Cs and recordings from Caruso to Pavarotti.

On week two, Fr Murray will host ‘The Genius of Mozart’, while week three will see the night dedicated to Gilbert and Sullivan. Vintage 1940s recordings from the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company will also be played on the night.

During week four, Fr Murray will explore ‘1000 Years of Sacred Music – An Introduction’ which will include pieces from Hildegard of Bingen, William Byrd, Claudio Monteverdi, JS Bach, Georg Handel, WA Mozart, Felix Mendelssohn, Edward Elgar and Aavo Pärt.

Week five will explore ‘The Puccini Operas’, while week six includes an ‘Irish Night’ that promises great craic agus ceoil.
