This week marks the beginning of a new adventure for musical Drumlish duo, Johnny and Mick Cronin. As members of the popular Irish mod/pop rock band ‘The Aftermath’, Johnny and Mick have joined forces with some of the biggest names in Irish rock and trad to create their version of the Euro 2012 Ireland soccer anthem.

Titled ‘The Rockier Road to Poland’, the lyrics were a comedic collaborative effort by Johnny and Mick in conjunction with lead-singer Shane MacGowan and his oldest friend Tom Creagh. The single, which will be released on Friday May 4, also features Rachel Ray (button accordion), Sean Gavigan (piano accordion), Mike McGoldrick (tin whistle / flute) and Joe Rooney (from Fr. Ted and Killinascully).

“This is a rockier version of ‘The Road to Poland’,” said Johnny Cronin speaking to the Leader.

He added: “It’s a comedy song. Ours is more of a ‘Lisdoonvarna / The Craic Was Ninety In The Isle of Man’ version. Even Gallagher’s pub in Drumlish gets a mention.”

The song, which is a remake of the official Ireland soccer anthem ‘The Rocky Road to Poland’, came into being when Shane MacGowan was visiting Drumlish recently.

“We were just having a laugh and it’s really just our version of the song. The song travelled from Nenagh (County Tipperary), to Longford and Westmeath before it was mastered in Abbey Road in London,” said Johnny.

Asked about the response to date, Johnny says it has been very positive.

“We know that the Irish community in England are really looking forward to hearing it,” he said.

Turning attention to the official Ireland soccer anthem ‘The Rocky Road to Poland’ which will also be released on Friday May 4. Its lyrics have been written by Today FM listeners and features Coronas’ frontman Danny O’Reilly, Bressie, Damien Dempsey, The Dubliners, and the Irish football squad.

The Aftermath, which also consists of guitarist Justin McNabb and bassist Martin Gray, have also been busy recently playing support to Bressie (The Voice of Ireland) in Waterford. Later this week, they will support the Mullingar singer once again at the LARCC lunch-time concert in Castleknock. Also playing at the event on Thursday May 3 are Sharon Corr and Brian Kennedy.

The midlands band are now looking forward to playing HYPE Festival (Longford), The Festival of Fires (Mullingar), Electric Picnic (County Laois), and The Marquee in Drumlish.

“We’re on ‘Celebrity Come Dine With Me’ at the beginning of June,” said Johnny referring to the band’s performance during one of the upcoming episodes.
