For the past two months, Cavan band ‘Get Rhythm’ have been touring the country’s prisons, playing to hundreds of inmates with their recreation of the classic prison gigs performed by Johnny Cash throughout his career. The eight-piece group replicates the style of Cash’s classic ‘Carter Family, Carl Perkins and Tennessee Three’ line-up.

“It was an idea that first started out as a small four-piece band where I hoped to play maybe one show,” explained the band’s frontman, Paul McCann. “I then thought, what about getting the big band together like Cash had used in the prison shows? It then occurred to me just how in keeping with the spirit of this show it would be if we could perform it inside prison walls, just like Johnny used to do.”

The Irish Prison Service don’t normally allow the general public inside their prisons and entertainment for prisoners is out of the ordinary, but eventually they were convinced to allow the show take place in their facilities. Starting out at Loughan House in Co Cavan, the group has gone on to perform in prisons throughout the country, including multiple appearances at Mountjoy and Wheatfield. Get Rythym has also appeared on national television and radio in connection with
the project.

The group has now moved outside prison walls and has secured a sell-out show at the Corn Mill Theatre in Carrigallen, where an additional performance has been organised for Sunday, June 16. Tickets for this unique show cost €15 and are available from the theatre’s box office on 049 4339612 or bookings@cornmilltheatre.com.
