May the force be with the Star Wars show

It has toured from New York and the UK to Australia and Dubai for the past ten years and now it’s set to finish up its Irish tour in Backstage Theatre, Longford. ‘One Man Star Wars Trilogy’ is a truly unique show and I would highly recommend it to fans of the original Star Wars movies. Even if you have only seen the films a few times, it is still well worth seeing. If you haven’t seen the movies at all, then you can still come along and see a guy perform three movies on stage, with no props or special effects of any kind. It really is a sight to behold.

I saw it recently in Roscommon and the audience ranged from someone who had seen all six of the Star Wars movies in one day, to someone in the front row who hadn’t seen any of them. I think I know which of the two enjoyed the show more.

The show is clever, funny and imaginative. Charles Ross uses every inch of his physical and vocal range to recreate every scene and character in the original Star Wars trilogy. His ‘Jabba The Hut’ is worth the admission price alone.

As he says ‘Embrace Your Inner Nerd’. And if you’re a huge Star Wars fan, go and see the show, you won’t be alone.

Q&A with Charlie Ross ...

Best Show? Indianapolis, 2005 in front of 4,000 hard-core Star Wars fans at a science fiction Convention called ‘Celebration Three’. The front row of the audience was made up of executives from LucasFilms who own the rights to Star Wars, and could decide whether or not to give me a licence to do my show. Absolutely no pressure!!

Best Thing About Touring In Ireland? Growing up in Canada, my ideas of Ireland were based on TV and movies. I love that this show gives me an opportunity to visit places and see what they are really like, to compare the truth to the misconceptions. I am here for a month and I’m really looking forward to seeing rural Ireland especially. It’s great to work and be a tourist at the same time.

Best ‘Moment’ On Stage? The first time I played this show in New York I was incredibly nervous. It was a huge opportunity for me, but I was really scared that the audience wouldn’t get what I was trying to do, and I fluffed a line. I tried to cover it with a ‘Porky Pig’ impression and I could hear my brother laughing so hard in the audience, and I just knew everything was going to be fine. After that, I just relaxed and had fun. It was a fantastic personal moment for me and it happened on stage.

Best Reason To See Your Show:

To embrace your inner nerd! And if you are not ready to do that just yet, then come and watch someone else do it for you for an hour or so. You also get to see all three of the original Star Wars movies performed on stage by one person. Where else are you going to see that?
