Composing a new hit tune

Like many teenagers when Mark Prunty (18) dreams, he dreams of being a well known full-time singer-songwriter. Unlike many teenagers, Mark is realising that dream thanks to his perseverance and talent.

Like many teenagers when Mark Prunty (18) dreams, he dreams of being a well known full-time singer-songwriter. Unlike many teenagers, Mark is realising that dream thanks to his perseverance and talent.

Recently the young Ballinamuck musician released his début single on Youtube. Titled ‘If 2day I Die’, the piece was composed by the former Moyne Community School student and has already received over 3,000 views.

“‘If 2day I Die’ is about how music is constantly a part of my life. The lyrics look at what would have been my life if it ended today? What do I really want to do? It’s all about my love for music and what I want to spend my life at,” said Mark who has just completed his first year in Construction and Design Education at GMIT Letterfrack, Connemara.

He added: “Music is my first love. I can’t read it but I love to write songs. I’m nearly two years playing the guitar. I taught myself off Youtube. I also loved woodwork and technical drawing in school. Hence why I chose this college course.”

Since an early age Mark, a former contestant in Longford’s ‘Stars In Their Eyes’, has loved to sing.

“Years ago I sang the main song in a school play and from there went on to perform in Scór events over the years. In my first year I made it to the Leinster Finals,” said Mark.

A lover of all genres of music, Mark regards his key influences as Ed Sheerin, Foo Fighters, Jason Drulo, Bryan Adams, B.O.B., and Flo Rida.

“My songs are nearly always about life in general. Sometimes they are about a girl too. I have also composed a few about my mother who passed away when I was seven-years-old. I want to write a special one about mum,” said Mark who plays football with Fr. Manning Gaels, Drumlish.

He added: “This summer I am going to dedicate myself to finishing more of my songs and publish them on Youtube. It’s all about getting out there and getting recognised and show people what I can do.”

Mark also plays in the band ‘Dutch Courage’ with fellow Ballinamuck man Podge Gill.
