The annual Longford Dance Festival got off to a great start this afternoon, as dancers took to the Market Square to offer a taste of things to come.

A huge crowd gathered in town to watch the spectacle unfold, and as the dancers began their show, passers-by stopped to join in the fun.

Shawbrook Youth Dance got proceedings off to a great start on the Market Square. Performances from the Longford school’s students, along with other performers from near and far brightened up the town for more than half an hour, getting the crowd excited for what will undoubtedly be another spectacular Dance Festival.

Tomorrow, the festival will continue at the Backstage Theatre from 12pm with performances by the Dublin Youth Dance Company, Shawbrook Youth Dance, Creative Steps and Core Dance Company (Inchicore College of FE), who all featured in the opening flashmob. This will be followed by the Free-stage Free-style with Fidget Feet.

From 2pm, the Irish National Dance Awards will begin, with the classical ballet category being followed at 6pm by modern dance.

At 8pm, the presentation of the Irish National Dance awards will take place, before a performance by Principal Ballerina Viara Natcheva.

Master classes at Shawbrook will bring the festival to a close on Saturday. A Classical Ballet master class will be taught at 10am by Kathlyn Pope, while Luc Reboullet will lead a Contemporary master class at 12pm.
