A young Longford man was assaulted during an aggravated robbery of a house on the outskirts of Longford town on Wednesday night.
Three men wearing balaclavas broke down the front door of the private residence at approximately 12.30am and as they were making their way up to the top of the stairs in the home they met one of the occupants and a scuffle ensued.
One of the men wa
s carrying a baseball bat and another was wielding an iron bar. They struck the victim with the weapons on several occasions.
A female resident in the house then appeared and told the intruders that she had rang the Gardai and that they were on their way. The three raiders fled the scene at this stage.
The man who was assaulted was rushed the the Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar immediately after the incident. He received a deep cut across his chest area, severe bruising and several cuts to his face. After being held over night in the hospital to monitor his condition he was released yesterday evening.
This house was previously robbed on Saturday, January 30, last between 5pm and 6.10pm. On this occasion the intruders entered the house via a rear door and ransacked the house before stealing a large sum of cash.
The scene has been examined by the Gardai and they are asking witnesses with any relevant information to contact Longford Garda Station on 043 33 46741.
