Longford tunes up for the Banjo Festival

Longford town is gearing up for what promises to be another great weekend of music at this year's Johnny Keenan Banjo Festival, September 23 to 26.

Rodney Crowell, Iris DeMent, Mountain Heart and Brian Kennedy are among the headline names who will make their way to Longford later this month, where they will perform at the festival.

The launch to announce full details of the festival - just two weeks away - will take place Thursday September 9, 8pm, at PVs Red Room on Ballymahon Street, Longford.

Following on the huge success of last year's event, the festival organisers are especially proud of this year's line-up.

The appearance of Iris DeMent is generating a keen interest, as the Arkansas songstress hasn't turned up in Ireland for more than four years. This is to be Iris' sole performance within Ireland.

American singer/songwriter Rodney Crowell is a favourite in Ireland, having made his way here numerous times in recent years.

American bluegrass outfit Mountain Heart make their Irish dbut at the Banjo Festival. This powerful ensemble win over new fans everywhere they perform.

One of this island's favourite sons Brian Kennedy will headline the Friday night concert this year with Juliet Turner as his special guest. Having recorded together earlier this year, Brian and Juliet have shared the stage on numerous occasions.

Unlike Brian's touring performances which usually include his band, this appearance will feature Brian on his own, up close, guitar in hand.

Irish traditional outfit Shaskeen celebrate their 40th year in 2010. Formed originally as a cili band by Tom Cussen and the late PJ Hernon, Shaskeen are still going strong and have developed into a formidable concert group.

As in previous years, the festival will provide free music in the Market Square during the weekend, market stalls and exhibitions, educational music workshops, street and pub sessions, and a late night festival club.

Weekend passes and tickets for the nightly concerts available at the Music Centre in Longford, from Ticketmaster or by calling 087-281-7825.
