Livin Dred return to Backstage with compelling, moving story

Nomad & Livin Dred return to Backstage with the unmissable Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme, a compelling and moving story of eight Ulstermen who bond and unite as they prepare to fight in the terrible battle of the Somme in 1916 France.

Nomad & Livin Dred who are no strangers to midland audiences having been responsible for the smash hit The Dead School, which wowed audiences and critics alike in 2008. The show did it again this year, when it was invited to partake in the Dublin Theatre Festival, where it continued its unbroken run of standing ovations each night.

This year’s show is gearing up to be an even bigger hit with a stellar cast including Irish theatre veteran Ian McElhinney.

The play centres on the experiences of eight men who volunteer to join the 36th Ulster Division at the beginning of the First World War. Whilst their bonds of friendship grow amidst the horror and despair of the French trenches, they march towards their seemingly inevitable sacrifice.

The characters of the play are all from Ulster farms, factories, townlands and towns. Ordinary young men plucked from their homes to follow the dream of freedom they have themselves brought to the battlefields of France their own baggage. The play, seen through the memory of the sole survivor, a guilt-ridden product of the Protestant Ascendancy named Pyper, McElhinney, also shows how in war the men instinctively bond.

An emotional and intellectual journey that is at once thought-provoking and inspiring, Observe The Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme promises a memorable night of theatre.

Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme comes to Backstage for two nights only Tuesday November 10th and Wednesday 11th November. Tickets v20/v18 are available on 043 33 47888, from Farrell & Coy in Longford and online on www.backstage.ie
