A true masterpiece of Irish literature

Following on from their acclaimed production of Flann O'Brien's The Third Policeman, Blue Raincoat Theatre Company present Flann O'Brien's masterpiece, At Swim Two Birds is at Backstage Theatre on Saturday February 13 next.

Currently being made into a movie starring a Colin Farrell, Gabriel Byrne, Brendan Gleeson, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Cillian Murphy (what a cast list!), this wildly comic send-up of Irish literature and culture is the story of a young, lazy, and frequently drunk Irish college student who lives with his killjoy uncle in Dublin.

When not in bed (where he seems to spend most of his time) or reading he is composing a mischief-filled novel about Dermot Trellis, a second-rate author whose characters ultimately rebel against him and seek vengeance.

From drugging him as he sleeps to dropping the ceiling on his head, these figures of Irish myth make Trellis pay dearly for his bad writing. Hilariously funny and inventive, At Swim-Two-Birds has influenced generations of writers and comedians; in fact, Tommy Tiernan actually cites Flann O’Brien as the inspiration for his stand up comedy.

At Swim Two Birds is heralded as a true masterpiece of Irish literature.

See it brought to life on stage before it takes our cinema screens by storm later this year.

At Swim Two Birds comes to Backstage for one night only on Saturday 13th Feb at 8:30pm. Tickets are v16/v14 and are available on 043 33 47888 from Farrell and Coy in Longford town or online on www.backstage.ie
