The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

The Book Thief is set against the backdrop of Nazi Germany and the unfolding lives of working class Germans as they endeavour to survive in a country that they are no longer familiar with.

The book which is written by Markus Zusak, is a small story about a girl, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist fighter and quite a lot of thievery.

As World War II beckons, death has never been closer, not only in Germany, but througout the whole of Europe and the people of Germany hold their breath. Liesel, a nine year old girl is living with her foster family on Himmel Street in a small town north of Munich. Her parents have been taken away to a concentration camp and her little brother dies on a train.

This is her story of survial - surviving grief, abandonment and war and provides the reader with a blissful insight into the true spirit of her heart and mind and her sheer determination to learn to read despite all the obstacles in her way.

This story is also about friendships that lasted the test of time and it highlights the endurance and kindness of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

The book brings the reader on a remarkable journey through a period in history which changed the world forever. From the moment you pick up 'The Book Thief', it is impossible to leave it down and you even find yourself rooting out old hiostory books to fimilarise yourself with some of the horrific events that unfolded in Nazi Germany in the 1940s.

This is a thought provoking and beautiful book which will have you laughing and crying from the moment that you begin scrolling through its important pages.
