Hearts were breaking in south Longford when it was learned Georgia Salpa is not the eagerly-awaited celebrity banisteoir for Newtowncashel GFC. Speaking to the Leader, Georgia’s modelling agent, Andrea Roche, confirmed that the Greek-Irish celebrity is not taking part in the popular RTE television series.

“I’m sure the boys in Longford will be heart-broken,” laughed the Dublin-based agent.

However, club chairman Mick Casey said: “We don’t particularly mind at all who we get. Everyone is welcome. We’re looking for somebody who will get involved with the parish as well as the club.”

Now in its fifth series, ‘Celebrity Banisteoir’ targets intermediate ranked clubs and places a celebrity manager (banisteoir) with each club.

Asked if he preferred a male or a female banisteoir, Mr Casey replied: “We’ve no problem as to whether it’s a man or a woman. We just want someone who will help to promote the parish. The GAA is struggling to survive in rural Ireland.

“This would have a great spin-off for the parish and the club. That’s what happened in other parishes where it (Celebrity Banisteoir) has taken place.”

On July 22 the cameras will arrive at Newtowncashel GFC and already excitement is mounting in the parish.

“The celebrity will arrive then. We really have no idea before that time,” said Mr Casey. Two Celebrity Banisteoirs have already been announced with the arrival of Brian Ormonde at Rochfortbridge and Pippa O’Connor at Naomh Brid’s, Ballintra, Donegal.

“We’re really looking forward to July 22 here,” said Mr Casey. “We’re also looking forward to Longford beating Limerick the week before.”
