One acts take centre stage at Killoe

The Cilleo Yew Tree Players Ennybegs, Killoe, are once again ready to bring to stage their three one act plays. The group earlier this year celebrated 25 years in existence and staged ‘One flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ to sell out audiences. With rehearsals in full swing and not long till show time, the three plays to look forward to are: ‘Bedlam’, ‘Nothing personal’ and ‘After Hours’. ‘Bedlam’, written by John Felton, is the first play. A middle-aged couple, George and Suzie, struggle with an ordinary, everyday event, in this case buying a new mattress. The ordering and paying last week was easy… now comes the hard part, waiting at home for the delivery man to arrive.
When George finds out they’ve delivered it next door, his blood pressure takes a turn for the worse as neighbour Becky describes arriving home to find the mattress and headboard blocking both her stairs and the door to the kitchen – no toilet and no tea tonight! George alternates between frustration and rage in his dealings with various members of the shop’s staff in his attempts to get it redelivered, until he hits on a cunning plan to force their hand. The comedy is true to life relating, as it does, a common problem, experienced by most of us!
‘Bedlam’ is directed by Donna Downey and stars Tommy Mollaghan, Donna Sorohan, Sinead McCormack and Charlie Canning. ‘Nothing Personal’, written by Hugh Leonard, is the second of the one act plays. This highly acclaimed play is directed by John Doherty and stars Thomas Brady, Sean Sheridan, Grainne Fox and Peter Brady.
It is set against the back-drop of the Northern troubles and it gives an insight into the dark side of life in Ireland in the 1980s. Phil is drawn into a situation, which is completely unexpected and alien to him, when he meets Pat and Betty who have a sinister agenda of their own. The play, loaded and tense, is a demanding piece of drama which is sure to provide quality enterainment for the audience. ‘After Hours’ is written by Philip Callan. This is an old radio play set in Bartley Brogan’s Public House late one evening. Philip Callan’s son, James (85), will grace us with his presence on the Saturday night. His daughter founded Garbo Productions in Dublin and is a script writer for Fair City.
This one act comedy is directed by Mary Mahon and stars Niamh Mahon, Mickey Kenny, Brendan Harte, Declan Rowley and Shane Sorohan. This year the Cilleo Yew Tree players are delighted to be joined on stage by Shane Sorohan, Brendan Harte, Declan Rowley and Niamh Mahon, all of whom are making their respective stage débuts.
Declan Rowley, involved with the group for some time, directed ‘Da’ and ‘Cash on Delivery’, while Niamh Mahon has previously been involved with Backstage Youth Group. She is appearing for the first time with Cilleo Yew Tree Players. Performances for two nights only, Saturday November 24th and Sunday November 25th, at 8.30pm nightly.
