It was certainly a case of being on the pig’s back for one astute collector at Longford Indoor market after picking up a collectable pig that could now be worth several thousand Euro for just €3.

This small sleeping pig, which is a limited edition replica of the original models produced by Wemyss in its pottery in Fife between 1882 and 1928, is amongst some of the most valuable ceramic ornaments on the market today, with figures for these collectables often reaching into the thousands.

The sleeping piglet is said to be the rarest and most desirable of all of the Wemyss ware, and is believed to have been snapped up for a steal at the market in recent months. The collector, who does not wish to be named, got in touch with the organisers of the Indoor Market last week to tell them about his discovery.

“We got a phone call recently from a regular visitor to the market who told us about a number of items he had picked up at some of the stalls that are highly sought after and valuable collectables, including the sleeping pig, which is believed to worth far more than the €3 he paid for it,” one of the Longford Indoor Market organisers told the Leader.

The sleeping piglet was not the only valuable find, as the eagle-eyed collector snapped up a Carlton Plate and a collection of Cottage Ware, both highly sought antiques.

However, while these items are believed to be very valuable, the collector has no intention of selling them on. So it seems, this little piggy has found a good home...
