Macabre outfits abound as Dead of Night returns

Close to 200 children from almost every corner of Co Longford are expected to descend on Longford town later this evening in anticipation of this year’s eagerly awaited Dead of Night Festival.
The Halloween carnival, which is now in its seventh year, promises to be the biggest and most colourful yet with organisers pledging vibrant and eerie outfits galore for those in attendance.
“It will be very, very colourful, that’s for sure,” said an excited sounding Eddie Ward.
The HSE project manager is one of umpteen representatives from local bodies and organisations involved in this year’s staging of the popular festival.
And according to Mr Ward the occasion looks set to surpass the success enjoyed by last year’s corresponding event.
“That’s what we are hoping for,” said Mr Ward. “St Christopher’s have collaborated with Workhouse Studios to create a really eye catching Ghouls and Ghostships creation. There are also six national schools with 180 kids from Co Longford taking part and over 40 girls from Scoil Mhuire are going to perform a Halloween related dance.”
Starting from 6pm when the gates to the town’s Connolly Barracks, organisers are asking participants involved in the parade to assemble at the Market Square half an hour later ahead of a projected 7pm start time.
The parade, scheduled to finish with an evening of fun filled activities inside the barracks shortly afterwards, is something which Mr Ward believes sets Longford apart from many of its neighbouring counties.
“It is a unique event and there will be things like large inflatable attractions for the kids to enjoy as well as food and refreshments. The fact it is an evening of free entertainment is also important in that it provides a safe and alternative focal point for the community.”
Not the worst way, perhaps to spend a couple of hours free gratis on Halloween night?
