Longford Photographer of the Year announced

The winners of the Longford Photographer of the Year competition, in association with Eamon Farrell's Longford Photo Centre, have been announced, with first prize going to Jakub Safiak, for his photo entered in August last year.

The year-long competition was run through a series of themes, with a stipulation that each photo should be taken in County Longford.

The result was a series and top quality images of the county, with a high standard of entries submitted throughout the year.

Sifting through the hundreds of entries, Longford Leader photographer, Joe McDonagh, picked out his top three photographs.

Speaking about Jakub's first place entry, Joe said, "Technically, it's excellent. It shows our times past, and what's gone, and the desolation of the whole thing. I really liked it," he said. For his entry, Jakub receives the first prize of j300 voucher for Eamon Farrell's Longford Photo Centre.

Second place went to Fiona Madden, who submitted Sunset at Lough Salagh. "There's a nice sense of peace and tranquillity. Again, it's technically good," said Joe. Fiona receives the second place prize of a j200 gift voucher from Eamon Farrell's Longford Photo Centre

Third place went to Esther Doyle, who submitted To infinity and beyond - a picture of the kids learning karate in the Aurora Hall in Legan.

"The picture shows the karate teacher commanding everyone's attention, which can be hard to get. There's also a little bit of work gone into the photo afterwards," said Joe. Esther receives a j100 voucher from Eamon Farrell's Longford Photo Centre.

As well as the winners, we have also published some of the other photos that were submitted throughout the year. They clearly show just how hard the judge's job was to pick the winners. Thanks to all those who took the time to submit their photos. More of the entries can be viewed on the Longford Leader website: www.longfordleader.ie later this week.
