Local success at Fleadh Cheoil 2012

Longford was once again the proud recipient of a number of medals in this year’s Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann. In categories ranging from banjo to ceili drums, the county’s talented musicians successfully achieved top places in Ireland’s most prestigious traditional music festival.

Congratulations to Longford’s winners who were as follows: Laura Ni Dhochartaigh, John Dungan Branch CCE, Granard (Mouth Organ, 12-15 yrs, 3rd); Elaine Ni Raghallaigh, John Dungan Branch CCE, Granard (banjo, 15 – 18 yrs, 2nd ); Ronan O’Ceallacháin, Joe Callaghan Branch CCE, Longford (ceili drums, 12-15 yrs, 2nd ); Eoghan Mac Giolla Chriost, Joe Callaghan Branch CCE, Longford (ceili drums, 15-18 yrs, 1st); Laura Ni Cheallachain, Joe Callaghan Branch CCE, Longford (accompaniment, 15-18yrs, 1st); and Nathan O’Bradaigh, John Dungan Branch CCE, Longford (songs in English (men), 12-15 yrs, 3rd).

Approximately 3,000 competitors took part in the 61st Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann over a three day period in Cavan town. The county town was given the singular honour of being the festival’s host town for the third year running.

According to Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann, the Breffni capital spared no effort ensuring there was an entertaining event-packed programme. President of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, Vince Jordan, extended his heart felt congratulations to all of the competitors, organising committee and noted that they have “taken the standard of Irish traditional music to a new level”.

He concluded that it was delightful to see so many young people at the festival this year “proving that the passion for traditional culture, song, dance and Irish language is as strong as ever”.

Awarded the Best Traditional Festival at the Irish Festival awards in 2011, Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann 2013 is taking place in Derry City from August 12-18 (www.2013fleadh.ie).
