John Spillane session at the Dock

John Spillane.

John Spillane.

John Spillane is a musician, songwriter, performer, recording artist, storyteller, poet and dreamer. In a world filled with strife and upheaval, time-out with John is enough to ease the load. What makes John special is that he is an artist who knows how to deliver all that he has to offer to anyone of any age, male or female, no matter the musical preference.

John is a native of Cork, the county he lovingly describes as “the centre of the universe”, and it has been a huge creative influence on him. Vocally, he is quite unique with an almost sean nós-like element in his singing and he is said to have a voice “full of honesty, commitment and sensitivity”.

Two-time Meteor award winner, John is one of the most accomplished songwriters in Ireland today. Among those who have covered his songs are Christy Moore, Pauline Scanlon, Sharon Shannon and Sean Keane, to name a few.

His performances shimmer with the magic realism that permeates many of his songs as he effortlessly flits between beautiful poetry tinged with melancholy to roguish, irreverent Cork humour. If you are looking for a night of good ‘craic’, a John Spillane show should not be missed.

The Chapel Sessions will host another great night of live music when John Spillane comes to the Dock next Saturday, July 28. And with room for just 120, early booking is advisable to avoid disappointment.

Tickets €20, available from The Reading Room, Bridge Street, Carrick-on-Shannon, Tel: (071) 9671580 or by calling 087 6983680/ 087 6112924. Doors open at 8pm
