Excitement builds ahead of Intermediate and Junior finals

Final fever will hit four Longford parishes this weekend as both the Junior and Intermediate Championship titles are up for grabs.

The bunting is up, the flags are flying and the club gear has been pulled from hot-presses all over Granard, Cashel, Legan and Moydow.

On Saturday, last year’s winners Moydow Harpers will be hoping to land back-to-back titles when they take on Legan Sarsfields in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park at 5.15pm. As our analysis on page 37 reveals, it’s the holders versus the favourites in what promises to be an exciting game. Both teams had to overcome a replay to reach the decider, so there’s likely to be little between the sides come the final whistle.

Sunday will see the conclusion – unless it’s a draw, of course – of one of the most competitive Intermediate championships of recent times, with Granard taking on Cashel at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park at 1pm. These two sides have a great footballing tradition, with a string of Connolly cups to their names. After dropping-down from the Senior Championship last year, both clubs have regrouped and played some outstanding football on their journey to this year’s final.

Cashel will be hoping this will be the first of two titles, as they will also compete in the final of the reality TV programme, ‘Celebrity Bainisteoir’ in the coming weeks, but Granard will be hoping to put their own stamp of reality on the southsiders when they meet on Sunday.

Either way, expect plenty of thrills and spills along the way in what promises to be a serious battle. Preview page 39
