Diverse line-up for this year’s Athlone Literary Festival

Athlone’s Literary Festival (October 4-7) which is now in its ninth year, has announced its 2012 line-up.

It features diverse events such as a a poetry evening with Paul Durcan, a discussion with eminent Irish psychiatrist and author Professor Ivor Browne, a creative writing workshop with author Anne Skelly and a play writing workshop with Thomas Conway, Literary Manager of Druid Theatre.

This year the festival also includes a Literary Walking Tour of Athlone, a Poetry Slam with the Gombeens, exhibitions, a number of children’s events and a Flash Fiction competition.

Speaking about the 2012 event, Festival Chairperson Fionnuala O’Connell said; “A popular event at the festival every year is our in-conversation afternoon and this year we are delighted to welcome eminent Irish psychiatrist & author Prof. Ivor Browne. He will be conversation with well-known journalist and feminist Nell McCafferty.”

Ms O’Connell added: “The festival endeavours not just to engage readers but also to encourage writers. We are pleased to have the opportunity to offer this year workshops in creative writing and play-writing and I would encourage all those who have ever felt the urge to write to come along and take part in these workshops.”

Another highlight will be a poetry evening with renowned poet, Paul Durcan. He is one of Ireland’s foremost and most prolific poets and he will be reading from his newly published collection, “Praise in Which I Live and Move and Have My Being”, which critics have described as being pervaded by a light and gentle humour.

The event has something for everyone, whether it’s fiction, poetry, music or true-life stories, Athlone Literary Festival is set to deliver a diverse and exciting programme this October. The opening event of this year’s festival will be a James Joyce “The Dead” dinner in the Left Bank Bistro, where diners will partake in an evening of dining and reading in true Edwardian style with good food, music and song.
