Celebrating Library Ireland Week
Library Ireland Week, a national event promoting library services across Ireland, was recently celebrated in many parts of the county. In Longford Library Dr. Philip Brady, Edgeworthstown, launched his latest collection of poetry, ‘Missing’. All proceeds from the sale of this book go to an African cancer care unit in Uganda.
In Drumlish Library the Drumlish Knit and Stitch group, who meet weekly in the library, held an open day displaying all the beautiful knits and crafts that they produce. Longford, Lanesboro and Ballymahon library also have their own knit and stitch groups which meet weekly in their respective libraries.
Library Ireland Week celebrations continue this week with the launch of a new literacy project for preschool children and their parents in Springlawn and Harmony preschools. The project is called ‘Tell me a Story’ and is a partnership project led by Longford library, Longford County Childcare and the Rapid coordinator.
The objective is to encourage young children, their parents and playgroup leaders to listen to stories and to tell themselves stories including their experiences of the world around them. Through this enjoyable process they begin to explore their understanding of vocabulary, narrative structure and self expression and this will assist them to prepare for oral and written literacy.
“If children value themselves as story-makers they are more likely to show interest in and become confident readers and writers throughout their lives,” said Longford County Librarian, Mary Carleton Reynolds.
Here in County Longford, libraries have never been busier with a whole range of services and activities to appeal to all ages from the very young to the very old.
“At the heart of what we do is helping individuals and communities realise their potential and enhance their skills and capacities,” she said.
“We provide easy access to information, literature and learning for all both in print and digital format. We endeavour to make all of our libraries, active, inspiring, bright and welcoming spaces for people to come and relax, study or enjoy some of the many events that take place there.”
eBooks have become popular for many book lovers and now Longford library customers, both adults and children, can browse, checkout and download a range of eBooks or eAudio books from the county’s new digital library collection to many devices.
