Celebrating Ballymahon’s rich heritage

There’s nothing quite like stepping back in time and savouring the past, particularly when that past is rich with vibrancy and heritage. On Saturday August 18, the Ballymahon Traders Association, in conjunction with Ballymahon Community Library, will host the 2012 Ballymahon Heritage Day – a day where the community and visitors alike will be ‘Celebrating Ballymahon Through The Ages’.
Among the many activities planned in the lead up to the day are: displays of photographs, articles and advertisements in shops and businesses throughout the south county Longford town; and a photographic exhibition and a folklore exhibition (1937-1938) in the Ballymahon Library.
On the day, the provisional itinerary includes; storytelling (ages 5-8), a talk by County Archivist Martin Morris titled ‘Ballymahon 100 Years Ago’; a walking tour of the town with Mr Morris and Mairead Ni Chonghaile (County Heritage Officer); a display of birds of prey; a High Nelly parade, a display of butter-making, traditional cooking, pottery (by Thomas Lynam), crochet and stone masonry.
The streets will be alive with a traditional market showcasing local produce and in the afternoon young musicians will add their touch to Main Street’s festive-like atmosphere. There will also be a boat trip on the Royal Canal.
