Behind the Ryans

Known simply as The Ryans, Jacky (68) and Paddy (23) are a father and son duo who are also the recent winners of the Best New Irish Act in the international Irish Music Awards. In addition they were nominated for the Best Duo.
While Jacky was born in Liverpool, his mother hailed from Mostrim, Edgeworthstown, and as a young man Jacky spent many years in the midlands and Cork before returning to Liverpool. During his time there he played with the Cork Hibernians.
Music was an integral part of the Ryan household growing up and it wasn’t long before Jacky and his brothers formed a band that went on to support names such as the Wolfe Tones, The Dublin City Ramblers, and the Clancy Brothers.
“Dad wanted to bring me into the band but I was only 10 or 11 years old at the time. So he started playing with me at family functions etc.,” said Paddy Ryan, speaking to the Leader recently.
