Arts for the coming season at Backstage
Next month the Backstage Theatre’s autumn schedule gets underway and one of the highlights is the presence of county Cavan director, Padraic McIntyre. On September 12 he appears in conversation with renowned writer Pat McCabe. Together these men will explore the creative process behind their collaboration on ‘The Dead School’ (2008).
Later that month (September 28 and 29), Padraic is back with ‘The Lost Weekend’, a new play which he has written and directed. This play is about life, loyalty, laughter and love, and is centred around a bus journey, salsa lessons and a late night encounter with vodka and Red Bull.
From county Leitrim, award-winning Seamus O’Rourke brings his latest play ‘The Sand Park’ to Longford. Given the popularity of O’Rourke’s work, it’s advisable to book early.
Another highlight of the season is the ‘One Man Star Wars Trilogy’, which takes place on Saturday, November 10. Canadian actor Charles Ross gives a comedic performance that has received rave reviews from media such as ‘The Daily Telegraph’ who stated “It’s a joy...quite brilliant.”
Decadent Theatre returns after their award winning production of ‘The Seafarer’ last year, this time with another of Conor McPhearson’s classics ‘Port Authority’. This takes place on Wednesday, November 14. To top off the drama for the season Livin’ Dred make a much anticipated return with Seamus O’Rourke’s comedy, ‘Ride On.’ Directed by Padraic McIntyre, the play features O’Rourke himself as well as some of Ireland’s leading actors. The curtain raises on this production on Friday, November 30 and Saturday, December 1.
There will also be three exhibitions at the popular Longford arts venue this coming season. These are an art exhibition by Anne Rigney, a photographic exhibition by Shelley Corcoran and her students, and a ceramic exhibition by Ed Walshe.
