Abbeyshrule hosts Saw Doctors’ return

The Saw Doctors.

The Saw Doctors.

Legendary Galway band Saw Doctors return to Longford on Friday December 28 next for a gig at the Rustic Inn, Abbeyshrule.

Since bursting onto the music scene in the 1990s, with iconic songs like ‘I Useta Love Her’ and ‘N17’, the band have evolved and regenerated in some ways. Their drummer Rickie O’Neill (21) wasn’t event born when ‘I Useta Love Her’ went to number one and became the biggest selling Irish

single ever.

Rickie joins original founder members Davy Carton (vocals, guitar) and Leo Moran (guitars, vocals) along with Anthony Thistlethwaite (bass guitar, saxophone) and Kevin Duffy (keyboards, vocals) in the current line-up of the band after many successful gigs in the county, they return to Abbeyshrule for a post-Christmas gig.

Formed in Tuam, in the late 1980’s, The Saw Doctors were discovered by Mike Scott of The Waterboys on a stormy wintry Tuesday night in Galway city, plying their trade in the back of The Quays Bar.

Scott invited the band on a tour in 1989 and fulfilled his offer and produced the band’s first single, ‘N17’, which features the then Waterboys’ saxophonist, and now Saw Doctors’ bass player, Anthony Thistlethwaite, in the outro..

‘I Useta Lover’ was the band’s second release and throughout the nineties, they had a number of chart successes, including ‘Small Bit Of Love’, ‘To Win Just Once’ and ‘World Of Good’.

Several studio albums followed - ‘If This Is Rock And Roll I Want My Old Job Back’, ‘All The Way From Tuam’, ‘Same Oul’ Town’ and ‘Songs From Sun Street’ - and following a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Meteor Awards of 2008, The Saw Doctors continued to gain an ever-increasing and enthusiastic following on the Irish college scene, ensuring a young and lively new audience in their home country.

The end of 2011 brought another surprise hit for the band with the old 60’s classic ‘Downtown’ re-vamped and recorded featuring Petula Clark. The lively duet made it to number 2 in the Irish singles Christmas chart and actually made it to number 1 in the iTunes chart.

Catch their lively show in Abbeyshrule on December 28 next.
