The passing of a Longford gentleman
James (Jim) Quinn.
It was with heartfelt grief that the community learned of the passing of James (Jim) Quinn at the Maher Hospital, Dublin, on Wednesday, August 8, last.
Well known proprietor and manager of James Quinn Auctioneering, Jim was born to parents Joe and Anna at Drumgowla, County Leitrim, on May 26,1941. He was one of four children, having three sisters Aida, Josie and Tish.
In 1951 Joe and Anna made the decision to purchase a farm holding at Nappagh, Moydow, County Longford, and it was here that Jim was reared and spent the rest of his years. Over the decades the Quinns have become part of their new community and more than earned themselves the privilege of Moydow citizenship.
However, Jim never forgot his original roots and kept in contact with many relatives and friends in Leitrim.
It was in 1965 that he married Teresa (nee Gilchrist) of Trillick-a-curry, Longford, and together they had three children, Joe, Ronan and Lorraine.
Although not a big man in stature, Jim was certainly a strong man when it came to principles and was famed for having his opinions. He held his council well and as such was well respected.
He was known for his charitable nature, good deeds and kind words. Friends and family alike fondly remember him as a trustworthy person whose confidence was well sought after.
Generous and obliging, Jim never refused anyone assistance if it was within his power to help.
Jim developed asthma in his thirties and this limited his capacity to undertake certain activities. However, resourceful throughout his life, Jim managed to achieve an abundance of work, including his farming, courier service and his auctioneering business – all with the assistance of his family. Today his son Joe manages the auctioneering business.
Family was central to Jim’s life and he loved his children and indeed grandchildren greatly. Within the younger members of the clan he could see their unique qualities and this in turn was a reminder of his own good traits.
Among his best friends were his neighbours and his relatives, two that are especially remembered by the family are Fr. Seamus Cox and Fr. Jim Sorohan, who concelebrated his final Mass on August 12 last. Unfortunately Fr. Jim Joe Kelly was unable to attend.
The family of Jim Quinn would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to everyone, especially neighbours who rallied together in the aftermath of his passing. They also would like to thank the nursing care he received in Ballinderry, Bon Secours and Maher Hospital. Furthermore, appreciation goes to Dr. Mel Gorman, Dr. Trueick, and both Ann Gannon and Corcoran’s pharmacies. In addition, gratitude is extended to Fr. Lennon PP, Ardagh, whom Jim held in high regard and in whose company he found great peace.
According to one family member: “We all enjoyed his life and I think he did too. Jim Quinn was never ours to keep and it is with great reluctance that we give him back to God.”
Jim is sadly missed by his loving wife Teresa, sons Joe and Ronan, daughter Lorraine (Murtagh), sisters Aida (McDermott), Josie (Hillard), and Tish, nieces and nephews, grandchildren, son-in-law, daughters-in-law, neighbours, relatives and friends. May he rest in peace.
