Taking pride in Longford
Rathmhuire and Dolmen Services Ltd: Blaise Treacy (judge), Sean Howard, Jackie Kennedy (Manager Rathmhuire), Fintan Flood, Mayor Peggy Nolan, Lucy Callaghan and Cathal Logue (Judge).
Three of Longford’s most worthy groups have been chosen to represent the county in one of Ireland’s most prestigious competitions. The three groups selected to participate in the National Pride of Place competition are: Ennybegs Hall Committee, Rathmhuire and Dolmen Services Ltd, and the Temperance Hall Committee including the Attic Youth Group.
Ennybegs Hall Committee was chosen for their dynamic Titanic project known as The James Farrell Memorial Garden and the Eucharistic Congress Monument which commemorates the people from the parish of Killoe who travelled on board the Titanic.
Rathmhuire and Dolmen Services Ltd from Granard and Aughnacliffe, were chosen for their programme of work with older people in North Longford. Finally the Temperance Hall Committee and the Attic Youth Group were selected for their services to the local community.
This is the eighth year that Longford County Council (LCC) has participated in the competition. Previous county choices included Rathcline Sustainable Energy, ‘East Meets West’ Women’s Group and Longford Women’s Link (LWL).
The National Pride of Place Competition is hosted by Co-operation Ireland under its Local Authority programme in conjunction with the North/ South Local Authority Steering Forum. The aim of the competition is to encourage and acknowledge best practice, innovation and leadership in building communities.
The judging of these groups took place last month and the judges were senior local government officials from across the island of Ireland.
“Longford County Council would like to thank the groups for their tremendous work and to wish them well in the competition. The winners of the national awards will be announced at a gala dinner in Adare County Limerick in November,” said a spokesperson for LCC.
