Sadness over death of Moira Furey (nee Kenny)

There was a deep sense of sadness just after Christmas when news emerged of the death of Longford town native Moira Furey (nee Kenny), Avonmore, Leopardstown Road, Dublin 18 and formerly of Ballinalee Road, Longford.

Moira passed away peacefully at St Vincent’s Private Hospital on December 27, 2012 surrounded by her loving family, after a short illness which she bravely bore.

Born in Longford town, the late Moira Furey was the youngest of five children born to John and Rosemarie Kenny of Kenny’s, 16 Main Street Longford. Twin of Clement, she was also sister to Eugene - who runs the popular clothing store along Longford’s main thoroughfare - Joan (London) and Brian. She attended the Convent of Mercy in Longford town and worked at Smurfit Paribas and then at University College Dublin (UCD).

She married Dermot Furey of Gartlan Furey Solicitors, Fitzwilliam Square, Dublin and together the couple had three children - Brian (16), Molly (13) and David (11).

Moira’s children, husband and her family brought her great joy in life and she was held in great esteem both within the community in which she resided and by all those who knew and loved her.

The late Moira Furey was buried following Funeral Mass at the Church of St Laurence O’Toole, Stillorgan, Co Dublin on December 29 last. Chief Celebrant was Fr Simon Cadam who was assisted by Fr Tom Healy, Longford and Fr O’Brolchain, President of Blackrock College. Music was sung by Margaret Kenny (nee Mulligan) and her sisters Mary and Aideen. A Guard of Honour was also formed by the pupils of Blackrock College, Loretto College Foxrock and St. Laurence’s Primary School.

On January 12 last a special Memorial Mass was held at St Mel’s Chapel, Longford to remember the popular native who will be dearly missed by all those who loved her. Indeed the large crowds that gathered in Dublin to bid the late Moira Furey a final farewell, and again in Longford on January 12, to commomerate her life, is testament to the esteem in which she and the Kenny and Furey families are held.

Her passing is deeply regretted by her loving husband Dermot; children Brian, Molly and David; parents, John and Rosemarie; sister Joan; brothers Eugene, Brian and Clement; mother-in-law Maeve, father-in-law Billy, sisters-in-law, Orla and Margaret; brothers-in-law David, Patrick and Simon; nieces, nephews, relatives and her many friends. May she Rest in Peace.
