The N5 Longford Town by-pass opens to traffic this Friday

The N5 Longford by-pass will open to road users this Friday 3 August.

The by-pass is sixteen months in the construction and arrives two months ahead of schedule, according to Longford County Council. Mayor of Longford County Council, Cllr Sean Farrell, welcomed the news, saying “Longford will no longer be a bottle neck for through traffic heading west on the N5 and this road will bring improved safety for motorists and remove tailbacks and congestion from Longford Town.” He insisted the new by-pass would result in the town becoming more attractive to shoppers and pedestrians, as well as the local community, as heavy goods vehicles heading west would no longer clog up the town centre.

It is estimated the new by-pass will reduce average travelling times for those heading west by twenty-five minutes and remove 5000 vehicles per day from the Town centre.

Peter Malone, Chairman National Roads Authority said “The Longford by-pass will remove unnecessary traffic from the town centre, improve safety and assist in creating opportunities for local businesses. Additionally, it will allow residents and tourists alike to experience all that is on offer throughout the entire region.”

Michael Nolan, Head of the Regional Management National Roads Authority, commended the both the contractor and the local authority for delivering the project ahead of schedule.
