The Irish Red Cross recently presented a defibrillator to Cllr Micheal Carrigy, Chair of the Ballinalee community group’s AED (automated external defibrillator) project.
Just over a year ago the Irish RedCross Longford branch and the community group discussed ideas on fund raising to get a lifesaving AED for the community. One of the ideas put forward was to collect 250 old mobile phones in exchange for a defibrillator.
The Community group also staged a visit by Santa Claus in Ballinalee Hall last Christmas. The entire project was a success with the new defibrillator expected to be located outside the Garda station in Ballinalee village.
While this is the first public access defibrillator in the village, the group also aim to get at least two more for the village and surrounding town lands which will be placed at various locations. Due to the positive response in Ballinalee, the Irish Red Cross Longford branch hope to roll this project out to other communities across the county.
