Mullinalaghta folk cosy up to sponsor insulation boards

A novel way to raise some much needed funds to insulate the community centre in Mullinalaghta is underway. The initiative entitled ‘Sponsor an Insulation Board’ will encourage locals, businessses and other entities to donate money so that the necessary insulation works can be carried out on the facility, which was built in 1978 under the leadership of Fr Seamus McKeon and now lies at the very heart of the community in the picturesque north Longford parish.

Other works also in the pipeline include the installation of suspended insulated ceiling and four additional heaters in the main hall; replacement of all the single glaze windows with double glaze; Cosy boarding of the external walls in the kitchen and adjoining rooms and also installation of extra ceiling insulation; the replacement of the single story roof at the rear of the centre; installation of a projector and sound system in the meeting room; painting of the kitchen and adjoining rooms installation of two storage units as well as the installation of a new state of the art sound system for stage and viewing area.

Much of the refurbishment work that will be carried out on the centre over the coming months was indentified under the Mullinalaghta Village Area Enhancement Scheme, schemes which were run county wide in conjunction with Longford Community Resources Ltd (LCRL), providing each community with an opportunity to source match funding for enhancement works in their areas.

In recent months a number of small fundraising events have been held in the parish to initiate funds for the community centre works. Over the past 18 months, €6,000 has been raised and organisers are now very confident that the ‘Sponsor an Insulation Board’ initiative will go along way to securing the remaining monies necessary to fund the project.

“The premise is quite simple; people or businesses from the area can donate €20 to help install an insulation board, their contribution will then be recorded and placed on a plaque to remain on display in the Centre,” a committee member explained. “This is a great way for people to contribute to the future of the Centre and the important role that it has in our community. It is also a nice way for people who have moved away from the area to have their contribution remembered, if they wish to sponsor a board as their name, the townland from which they came from and the area in which they now live will be recorded on the plaque.”

It is anticipated that insulation works on Mullinalaghta Community Centre will begin before summer’s end. The local Foroige Club recently raised over €600 for the fundraising initiative by holding a cake sale following Mass. The sale also included a raffle for a lovely hamper of goodies which were kindly provided by Mr Crumb Foods, Finea. Local youth James Mooney organised a variety show and raised a similar amount of money.
