Large crowds gather for estate opening

There was more than a tinge of excitement in the air recently as over 100 people gathered to mark the official opening of a new housing estate in Longford town.
Respond, Ireland’s leading housing association formally opened its doors at its new, state of the art Townspark estate earlier this month.
Formally unveiled by Cllr Peggy Nolan, the event also saw Fair City’s Maclean Burke, aka Damien Halpin, make a special appearance as local residents basked in the warm sunshine.
Featuring 73 family homes and 36 neatly furnished households for the elderly, the estate also contains an aptly named ‘Men’s Shed’ for the estate’s male fraternity to come together and meet on a regular basis.
Its community centre, meanwhile, caters for all ages providing weekly coffee mornings with the added prospect of mother and toddler groups as well as a youth club also presently being lined up.
Addressing guests and interested obeservers, the association’s chief executive Fr Pat Cogan said the estate’s opening couldn’t have come at a better time for an organisation which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary.
“We (Respond) are excited to officially open Townspark, our first estate in Longford and we’re delighted to be able to celebrate our achievements with the people who matter most-our residents,” he proudly declared.
First established in 1982, Respond currently provides housing to almost 20,000 residents across the country.
Fr Cogan said the onset of the Townspark development, much of which was facilitated by local groups and bodies such as Revamp, was particularly uplifting.
“This family fun day has really shown that our aim is to build communities, and the whole community has taken part and enjoyed the event,” he continued.
“We’re looking forward to continuing to provide our service to the Longford community, and nationwide, for the next 30 years and more.”
