Four Ballinalee men will take part in next Monday’s Dublin City Marathon in aid of the underage teams of Clonbroney GAA Club. Part of Sean Connolly’s GAA Club of Ballinalee, youth teams from under-12 to under-16 play under the name of Clonbroney and have struggled to attract numbers in recent years, forcing the club to put out nine and eleven-a-side teams during competition.

U-12 Coaches Paul Glennon, Eamonn McEvoy, Sean McNamee and Raymond Carrigy will take on one of the country’s most gruelling physical tasks to help raise funds for a club which is currently experiencing somewhat of a renaissance in terms of participant figures with approximately 75 children turning up for training in recent weeks.

“Numbers have depleted in recent years”, says Paul. “So last year we decided to get a group together to see what we can do. We’ve been training for eight weeks now with both boys and girls teams for an hour every Friday evening and the response and the interest from the local community has been brilliant.”

After years of amalgamation with Colmcille GAA, Clonbroney are now going it alone on the county underage scene and have also launched a sponsorship card initiative to raise funds for their sides at all underage levels. Paul explains: “When we began training in August we handed out sponsorship cards to the families of each child taking part and there has been a great response it. All the monies raised from each card will go toward the development of the underage sides of Clonbroney GAA.”

If you wish to sponsor the four men before they take part in next week’s marathon just pick up your sponsorship card from any local store in the Ballinalee area.
