Edgeworthstown Tidy Towns making good progress

Edgeworthstown Tidy Towns are celebrating the arrival of the newest recruit in their battle to beautify the town – a new ride-on lawnmower.
The 20-strong Edgeworthstown Tidy Towns committee decided last year that due to the number of new housing estates in the area a lawnmower was required to maintain the grassy areas.
“Over the past number of years we’ve had a 60 percent increase in population and eight new housing estates where there was a problem with maintenance. Last year, the committee decided we needed to look at the challenge and raise money for a new lawnmower,” committee member and local councillor Tom Victory said.
A large fundraising drive was supported by the local community. Coupled with funding by Longford Community Resources Ltd the new mower was delivered last week. Workers with the local Tús scheme will now operate the mower.
Apart from the usual Tidy Town initiatives, such as planting flowers and litter collecting, the work being carried is also having a positive effect on people’s attitudes, according to Cllr Victory.
“We’ve noticed that people who may have moved to the town years ago, but never really got involved with the wider community are coming on board to help out. It’s a form of bonding to help create a stronger community as a result.”
However, the volunteers are still flabbergasted by the amount of litter they collect on their weekly litter-pick every Sunday morning. “Unfortunately, 90 percent of what we pick up could actually be recycled. It’s disappointing to see people still throwing stuff out the windows of cars.”
All incidences of fly-tipping are reported to the Litter Warden. “We need to be tough against people who are dumping bags of rubbish. If we find anything like that we contact the Litter Warden and hope then that a prosecution will be brought,” Cllr Victory added.
With judging season fast approaching for Tidy Towns, Edgeworthstown will be quietly confident of receiving positive accolades for the work done so far.
