DEATH: Regretfully we record the death of Marie Tiernan Willow Crescent Ballymahon which occurred in the Midlands Regional Hospital Mullingar on May 23 last. Marie took seriously ill about three weeks past with little hope of recovery during that time. She has been in reasonably good health up to her final illness. Marie had suffered a severe shock herself just a year and a half ago with the rather sudden death of her husband Frank. She was just beginning to recover from the shock of her sad loss. Marie who was formerly Marie Gray lived all her life in her native Ballymahon where she and her family were very well known and highly respected. She was always very cheerful with a word for everyone she would meet along the street. She was a devoted wife to her late husband Frank and a good mother to her five children. She was buried in the family plot in Forgney cemetery after eleven o’clock mass in Saint Matthews Church Ballymahon. We offer sincere sympathy to her family who have now suffered a double bereavement in a short time. We extend our sympathy to Ann Mark Tony Raymond and a special word of comfort to Orla who lives with her husband Ciaran and family Shane Lisa and Ian. May Marie and Frank rest in peace.
TUITE: We also offer our sympathies to Carol Nally Terlicken Ballymahon on the death of her father Pearse Tuite Edgeworthstown who died last weekend in his ninety second year.
BOOK LAUNCH: Our history of Mosstown and the mill is now printed and will be launched in the El Paso on this Friday night June 1st at 9pm. Guest speaker will be Frank Higgins son of late county engineer Dick Higgins and grandson of one of the directors of the Mill from 1870. The publication will have one hundred pages of the history of Mosstown estate for over one thousand years with special emphasis on the mill and its demise. It will also include old photographs letters and documents relating to the troubled history of the dynasty over the past four hundred years. Everyone welcome and refreshments will be served.
TURF CUTTING: Seldom have we seen so much turf cut in the Hollow Ring Dong bogs for many years. Almost every plot in the locality is now covered with freshly cut turf some in the spread and the rest made up in ricklings. No doubt the price of oil for central heating is largely responsible for the renewed interest in sod peat. At least we in the Kenagh area are free to cut turf. We should spare a thought for those who are now classed as criminals for carrying on a tradition that goes back over a thousand years.
LOTTO: The numbers drawn in Kenagh GAA Lotto for May 27th were 7,13,22,27. There were two match three winners Margaret Farrell Derralough and Gerry McGann Mosstown win forty euro each. 13300 euro going on four correct numbers next week.
