First Longford arthritis health fair

Rebecca Minnock; Mary Henry, Margaret Hughes; Maria Keelty, Loretta Doyle, Mary O'Hara, Lily Hannify and Zenta Romhild with Emma Minnock (age 4) who is the youngest member associated with the Longford Branch, having been diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis at 2 and a half years of age.

The Longford Branch of Arthritis Ireland held Longford’s first Health Fair in the Temperance Hall on Saturday September 22nd.

The fair was officially opened by the Longford Rose, Doctor Emily Hughes, while Mayor Peggy Nolan and James Bannon TD both attended on the day.

The aim of the Fair was to promote complimentary therapies which work well alongside conventional medicine and to raise money for Juvenile Arthritis. The Arthritis Ireland Ambassador for juvenile arthritis, Laura Hickey, was also in attendance on the day.

There were numerous therapists involved in the Fair, including a physiotherapist, homeopath, reflexologist, chiropractor, chiropodist, acupuncturist, the Irish Red Christ and Bi-Aura Energy Healing as well as Stenson’s Chemist and Longford Women’s Link. Clare, of Clare Frances Photography kindly donated her time to take official photographs of the event.

The entire committee of the Longford Branch were actively involved throughout the day, and a demonstration of ‘Fit Walking’ with Nordic Poles by Frank Fahey took place to highlight the upcoming Fittlesticks programme which is beginning on Wednesday October 17th for five weeks, at 12pm in the Family Centre on St Mel’s Road. The cost to participate in the programme is €20 and spaces are limited to 20, so early booking is essential. For further information call Rebecca on 086 2372492.

Huge thanks must go the numerous local businesses who donated raffle prizes for the day. The Longfrod branch of Arthritis Ireland are very grateful for all the local support they received, and special thanks must go to all the staff in the Temperance Hall, who always go that extra mile.
