Carrigallen Notes

Wind storm hits the area: Late Saturday night, Sunday morning winds of up to 50 mph hit the district. A number of trees were blown down on farms and a large tree was blown down on the main Mohill to Ballyconnell Road at Callough’s at the football field in Carrigallen. Many people going to Mass on Sunday morning had to make detours. Leitrim County Council have been warned about all such trees growing too close to the main road and should be cut down for safety reasons.

Christmas in Carrigallen: The town looked lovely with a large array of Christmas lights and the two outdoor cribs on each side of the street. The Christmas tree also gave our town a lovely appearance. Business people had their shops tastefully decorated and business was brisk during the last four days and shops remained open for business until 9.30pm.

Christmas in the churches: Large congregations were present in all churches which took on a little change. The Christmas Eve mass in St Mary’s church, Drumreilly was at 8pm. The very popular 12am midnight mass which has been celebrated for over 70 years was celebrated at 10pm for the first time ever. Another first was the fact that there was no choir although Fr Murray did his best to cope with this by having the congregation sing the Christmas hymns. Well done to all involved.

St Stephen’s Day: Large groups of mummers visited the area on St Stephen’s Day. They are much looked forward to by young and old alike.

Corn Mill Theatre: The Corn Mill Theatre Group presents A Matter of Practice, written by Cyril Daly and directed by Killian McGuinness. It takes place on Thursday, January 3rd 2013 to Saturday 5th and then on Friday and Saturday 11th and 12th. Show starts at 8.30pm each night and for bookings contact 049-4339612.
