Members of the public are this week being encouraged to throw their weight behind a novel initiative designed to make Christmas that extra bit special for disadvantaged children.
Now in its 12th year, the Christmas Giving Tree appeal is being run in conjunction with Longford town’s Hazelwood Shopping Centre with a festive tree being unveiled there just last week.

“You simply choose a card and buy a gift for them and return it to the tree,” said Colin, as he explained how the fundraiser works. “The charities then distribute the presents to the children.”

Last year the initiative helped 300 children. This year organisers hope to surpass that number.
