About the Longford Leader

Since it was founded in 1897, the Longford Leader has witnessed all the major events in Co Longford and the surrounding counties of Westmeath, Cavan, Leitrim and Roscommon. The Leader was there to record the struggle for freedom, the Civil War, the World Wars, the arrival of electricity, the industrialisation of Longford, the demise of many of those traditional industries in the county, the coming of the Celtic Tiger, the advent of Rural Renewal tax incentives, the effects of decentralisation and much, much more.

In charting the history of the county, the Leader, which is produced every Wednesday, has always worked to reflect the changes that have taken place in Longford and to highlight the impact of those changes, both positive and negative.

Today, the Longford Leader is recognised as one of the most dynamic and progressive regional titles in the country. A dedicated and hard-working news team ensure that the Longford Leader continues to bear witness to the changes that are taking place within the county and reports accurately and responsibly on those changes as well as all other local events and happenings every week.

In April 2006, the Longford Leader set up a second newspaper in Longford – the Longford Weekender. Like the Leader, the Longford Weekender is a weekly title that throws the spotlight on the local community. The Longford Weekender is a free newspaper that hits the streets every Friday. Created by the same team behind the Leader, the Weekender is produced to the same editorial standards that have made the Longford Leader renowned throughout Ireland and beyond.
